Do I need a Cover Letter?

Yes.  Cover letters are your opportunity to explain why you are sending your resume and to highlight your qualifications for the available position.

Tips for writing cover letters:

  • Keep it brief. Cover letters are a necessary evil but you will lose even the most obliged reader if it is too long.
  • Reference a specific position directly and state why you are qualified or interested in the position.
  • You should address the cover letter to an individual. To find the appropriate person, call the main number of the company and ask to whom you should forward your resume. If you cannot access an individual’s name, refrain from using "Dear Sirs." Use "Recruiter," "Human Resources Director" or another title in lieu of a gender specific greeting.
  • Do not use vocabulary you would not normally use in your daily speech.
  • Proofread, proofread, proofread! Ask someone to read your cover letter and resume to detect errors that even spell check can miss. Your cover letter is your first impression. Do not tarnish it with sloppy mistakes.
